Dia de Los muertos (11/1)

Saturday November 1st, 2008

Celebrate Cleveland's fourth annual Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) celebration, coordinated by Artistas Latinos Unidos (United Latino Artists) and spearheaded by artist Hector Castellanos.

The first day of the celebration includes a procession that's symbolic of spirits traveling home for the celebration. At 2:15 p.m., it heads west on Detroit Avenue to La Sagrada Familia Church, where parishioner Leticia Raigoza will have prepared an outdoor altar. The focus of the celebration is the altar dedicated to the deceased. There will be nine in the La Sa´grada Familia Church and parish hall designed by a flock of Cleveland artists, including Nina Hurin and Merlida Mercado.

Since no celebration is complete without food, Raoul and Roberto Rodriguez will be selling pan de muerto, decorated with little bones or skeletons made from dough, come hungry!

Festivities begin at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church (West 70th St. & Detroit Ave.)

Some of the celebration highlights are as follows
2:15 pm.: Procession departs for Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church
3:30 pm : Joya de Mexico mariachi band.
5:15 pm : Day of the Dead history talk by Hector Castellanos.
6:45 pm : Mexclatina music group.

If it's a nice day, ride your bike along the procession route. Bring the entire family and swing by at Mi Pueblo Taqueria (12207 Lorain Ave) for dinner after. Yumm!
