Unique "Artsy" Gifts (12/1)

Saturday, December 1st, 2007

In Cleveland we are sure of two things; one, a very cold winter (with wind chills below zero) and two, a weekend in December where amazing artists come out to share their wealth of artistic passions for shoppers young and old to enjoy and buy. Below are the top three weekend art extravaganzas in town. In all cases arrive early with cash on hand. There is sure to be something for everyone on your list.

Every year since 2001, the Bazaar Bizarre has brought together avant-garde knitters, hipster t-shirt printers, vinyl melters, and other makers of objets d'adorable. At last year's Bazaar many Clevelanders finished their Christmas shopping in record time, pawed covetously at a purse shaped like a turtle, ran into long lost friends, chatted up the author of a favorite web comic, and misplaced our friends again in the throngs of craft-hungry shoppers.

The 2007 Cleveland’s Bazaar Bizarre will take place from noon to 9:00 p.m. in the storefront of the Sincere Building on corner of East 4th and Prospect Avenue.
For more info on the Bazarre Bizarre visit

Not only is this space a very cool destination for an art show & sale, it is home to over 20 resident working artists.

The artists of the ArtCraft Building invite you to join them in their studios for the annual holiday sale of their work. They will be joined by more than 40 additional artists. This is a fine collection of emerging, established and eclectic artists celebrating the 20th annual Holiday Open Studio.

This show is open on Saturday from 12-9 p.m. and Sunday from 12-5 p.m.
The ArtCraft Building is located at 2570 Superior Ave. There is ample parking in the well-lit and secure lot behind the building, as well as on Superior Ave.
For more information on this show visit

This truly is a one-of-a-kind show. Filled with the most hip and fresh finds in town, be sure not too miss it! Shop for truly unique holiday gifts made by CIA their spare time.

The sale will be held in the Ohio Bell Auditorium. Open on Saturday from 10-8 p.m. and Sunday from 12-5 p.m, with a preview evening event Friday, from 6-8 p.m.

Explore Coventry Village

A few weekends ago, I had the pleasure of spending an entire Saturday evening with my good friend, exploring a few of the funky places located within the east side, boho-chic neighborhood...Coventry Village.

We had dinner at the Mint Cafe ( which included Thai Basil Chicken (extra spicy) and a tropical Mai Tai. The cafe offers dishes from Thailand, all prepared with the leanest cuts of meat, balanced with fresh veggies and spices. Reservations are recommended but only for a parties of two or more.

While we were waiting for our table at The Mint, we stopped into the newer location of Big Fun. Here we were treated to a little magic/card show while we shopped for humorous greeting cards, retro figurines (including E.T., Mr. T, Rambo, The Brady Bunch and Star Wars) and many novelties...candy necklace anyone? For store information, including special holiday hours, call 216.371.4386.

After Big Fun we explored City Buddha ( This store is located in what used to be the Food Co-op, but they have transformed it into a magical shopping destination. Here we bought a wooden ring and a beaded change purse. You could also pick up some amazing silk pillows or bamboo bowls, either would make for great holiday gifts.

After shopping and dinner...but right before dancing the night away at the B-Side... we stopped into the newest location of Phoenix Coffee (old Caribou Coffee) for a cup of caffeine to keep us going strong. We sat in some impeccable vintage upholstered chairs and experienced some truly unique people watching.

Our last stop for the evening, and main reason for our visit (thanks for the invite B&D!) was a concert at the B-Side ( located at the top of the street. This lounge club is open every night of the week, and offers a diverse range of sights and sounds. Depending on the evening, you may hear neo soul, electro house, mashed up hip-hop or even indie dance rock, but this evening we were there to see Baby DayLiner ( a super 'danceable' one man band. He was awesome!

All in all the evening in Coventry was great...I sort of felt like I had taken a mini-trip out of town, when I had only been a few minutes away from home. For more information on the tastes, shops and sounds of Coventry, visit

Thankful for Cleveland (11/22)

I am thankful for lots of things in Cleveland...but here are just a few of them.

> LAKE ERIE. I think we are all so lucky to live close to a real great lake.
Whether it’s spending the day paddling on kayaks or a lazy beach day at Huntington, Lake Erie makes Cleveland a great place to live.

> FAMILY & FRIENDS. The people of Cleveland welcome all with open arms. The Midwest attitude and way of living is the best of the best. From those that are born and raised "Clevelanders" to the many transplants, the area is filled with many interesting diverse individuals, which makes our city a great place to call home.

> THE WEST SIDE MARKET. What better place to go on an early Saturday morning then the Market? Filled with fresh veggies, unique cheeses and the ever popular Ohio City Pasta, it makes for a wonderful weekly shopping extravaganza. The Market makes Cleveland shopping special. Take a trip there to shop for your holiday feasts!

> VINTAGE FINDS. Unlike other cities, we are lucky to have our fair share of fruitful vintage and resale shops to choose from. Stop by half price Monday at Unique Thrift on Lorain or spend a long Saturday morning exploring Chelsea's Vintage Clothing. It's all about the deals, the special acquisitions and the one-of-a-kind scores. Believe it or not, our city is lucky to have such an assortment of vintage vendors nearby.

>SPORTS. What more is there to say other than Go Brownies! Rise Up Cavs! It's Tribe Time Now! Clevelanders should be thankful for our amazing triad of athletic teams that call Cleveland home. Let's go Cleve-Land!

>THE METROPARKS. Home to the best running and biking trails in Northeast Ohio, the Metroparks are a wonderful place to get moving or slow down, all while taking note of the beautiful natural surroundings. From winter to summer and back around to fall, the scenery and many activities that the Metropark system has to offer are extreme...there really is something for everyone. We are lucky to have such an active park system right in our backyard. Enjoy!

> PLAYHOUSE SQUARE. Cleveland is truly blessed to have such a solid foundation in the arts. With the largest theatre district between NYC and LA, the theatres welcome millions of patrons each year. From comedy and kids’ series to dance and musical performances, Cleveland’s true performance powerhouse offers plenty of live entertainment to choose from.

> CORNER BARS (& late night dance parties). Like most cities there are the local neighborhood bars, but no other city can compare to the numerous little watering holes our fair city has to offer. Whether you are looking for a place to sit and chat with friends, dance the night away to a great band or catch a game on the big screens, it's not hard to find a seat at a friendly little place around the corner.

I am thankful for all that Cleveland has to offer us, I hope you are too!

Pipettes Live in Concert (11/20)

Tuesday, November 20th, 2007

One of 2006's most beloved indie imports was We Are the Pipettes. The UK debut was a smart, impeccable, hip-counterculture take on tough/sweet '60s girl groups. Indie retro girl groups have come and gone, but few ever achieved the Pipettes' sharp vocal harmonies and catchy, hully-gully-inducing pop. Plus, it doesn't hurt that the gals do classic choreographed dance moves and have a top-notch backing band known as the Cassettes.

"Today, there's such a lack of any sort of self-awareness or a sense of humor," Gwenno says. "In a lot of the '60s girl groups, they were quite cheeky, and there was a quite a lot of sense of fun about it. And that seems to have disappeared. You either get a song that isn't really about anything, or you'll get a song that's desperately trying to be earnest."

Opening for The Pipettes will be Afternoon Naps and Monster Bobby. Beachland Ballroom and Tavern : 15711 Waterloo Rd, Cleveland, OH, 44110 : 216-383-1124 For ticket information visit for updates on the band visit their site

Hot. Latin. Paladar.

Explore Nuevo Latino flavors at Paladar, a rather recent addition to the Eton area in Woodmere. Described as a “Latin Kitchen & Rum Bar,” Paladar’s drink menu is extensive and even educational, with a 101 on rum. If you’re somewhat new to the popular Caribbean liquor, experience a tasting with Paladar’s rum flights. If it’s a refreshing drink you’re after, the large selection of mojitos, margaritas and caipirinhas are sure to please.

It’s easy to get caught up in the drinks, but don’t forget the food. Be sure to try traditional & seasonal guacamole (served with plaintain chips, yum!), as well as the great selection of appetizers and entrées, ranging from Latin “comfort food” to Nuevo Latino cuisine. A few of the menu terms may not be familiar, but you can learn a thing of two about by referring to the glossary for a better menu explanation. And of course, save room for dessert.

The stylish décor and lively atmosphere make Paladar a great location to meet for an evening of fun drinks and food to share. For the full experience, stop by on a Thursday for a night of live music.

Thanks Michelle for the great insight into a new Cleveland find, great post!

Juliette Lewis Sings (11/13)

Tuesday, November 13th, 2007

If you love Juliette Lewis like I do...think Kalifornia...then you can't miss her Cleveland musical debut, Juliette and the Licks. The sensual performer who earned an Oscar nomination for her role in Cape Fear is a hot, lycra-clad, ball of energy on stage.

"The prototype for a female is that they're desirable, pretty to look at, predictable and safe," says Juliette. "That's what my music is so important to me, because it's the antithesis of that, it breaks the mould." Such statement should come as little surprise to anyone who has been caught up in the full heat and sweat of a a "Licks live performance, which has seen Juliette continuing to emanate the same energy and disregard for convention like she's done her whole life.

Agora theatre, 5000 Euclid Ave. Cleveland OH. Show starts at 8:00pm. Tickets $12. For additional band information visit . For times and ticket information visit

Coffee Anyone?

November-December 2007

I heart Cleveland at this time of year because not only do I get to pull out my favorite hats and's also the time when the best coffee arrives right down the street from my house.

Yesterday I walked to the corner Einstein Bros® for my first cup of the Winter Blend Coffee. A special seasonal coffee with the perfect mix of vanilla, cinnamon and nutmeg, it was definitely worth the brisk morning walk.
