Weekend fun!

Living in Cleveland there is always SO MUCH to do when it comes to planning my weekends. Some people might think there is nothing going on, but I beg to differ, I can barely squeeze in a load of laundry with all the super fun activities that are going on...

> Swoosh, woosh and fly like a bird...well almost! (Tobogganing is fun!)

> Indulging in a plethera of sale coupons

> A nibble of Strawberries & Pink Champagne AND a bite of MSC Fluff

> A sale and some “pleasing” snack with RS

> A dance with my dog!!!

> Get my “bollywood” on!

> Making a birdie sling with some fabulous friends.

> Supposedly there is a big football game on?

What will you be doing this weekend? Celebrating family & friends? Shopping for a fancy dress? Sipping a hot toddy or two? Fill me in on what I am missing!

Go Cavs! (01/09)

Hello and Happy Friday!

So one of the reasons "I heart cleveland" is all the pro-sports that roll through our Northeast Ohio calender year. Baseball, Football and Basketball, we are a lucky city to have the ability to support this many professional athletes around town.

This morning I wanted write something sassy about tonights Cavs vs. Celtic game (8pm). Lebron, the uniforms, the home advantage, the dance team and how we are gonna pound the celtics...but I found this tantalizing article from “The Optimist” (www.nba.com/cavaliers/features/optimist_celtics_090109.html) and thought he summed it up best! A great read for an even better game tonight!

"Que pasa, proud citizen-soldiers of the Wine and Gold! I am the Optimist, and there are Celtics in town. So Let’s Get It On.
That’s right, the World Champion Boston Celtics are amongst us at this very moment – skulking around Tower City eating our hot pretzels and driving guests at the Ritz-Carlton insane by blasting their Irish folk music at all hours.

That’s how these Celtics roll. They’re Champions with an attitude. Don’t like it? Pound salt.

That’s fine by me. The Cavaliers and Celtics have always had, at best, an acrimonious relationship. And you readers know how I personally feel – and have always felt – about our Gaelic nemesii. For some people, it’s Michigan. For others, it’s the Pittsburgh Steelers or New York Yankees. For me, it’s the Celtics.

Whether it was their derailment of the Miracle squad in ’76 or Larry Bird and Co. snuffing World B. Free’s Comeback Cavs in ’85, the Boston Celtics have brought the Wine, Gold and I nothing but heartache. And I’ve witnessed much of this ugliness first-hand – from seminal events like last season’s seven-game slugfest in the Eastern Conference Semis, to traumatizing incidents like watching the flight of Paul Pierce’s lung-butter the night he chugged one in the direction of little Luke Jackson at an exhibition game in Columbus.

But that stuff’s all ancient history when these two teams get down tonight at The Q. Right now, the Celtics and Cavaliers are the Eastern Conference’s heavyweight division. So prepare ye for a Friday Night Fight on the corner of Huron and Ontario.

Two weeks ago, the Mighty Mighty Bostonians looked like they might not lose again all season. But then the Lakers dropped them on Christmas Day and they ain’t been right since – dropping six of their last eight. Doc Rivers’ club needs to get themselves back together. And they’re thinking that a nationally-televised win over the top dog in the East would do the trick.

That’s just the kind of East Coast bias that cheeses we Midwesterners off. Get off the schneid somewhere else, Celtics! You can huff and puff, but you can’t blow this house down. And we both know: If P.J. Brown doesn’t put back a pair of errant air-balls, the Wine and Gold wins Game 7 in Boston.

Yeah, when the Celtics roll into town, it gets everyone’s medulla oblongata throbbing. Even our little mop-topped friend from Gamecock Country has his panties in a bunch over Boston."

GO CAVS!!!!

1967 Higbee's Commercial

While searching for vintage Downtown Cleveland shopping history I came across this commercial and had to share.

Higbee's Department Store was a Cleveland, Ohio Landmark from 1860 until 1992. For generations, Clevelanders enjoyed their visits to this glamorous department store. It was located in the Terminal Tower Complex. Features included the Twigbee Shop, the Silver Grille Restaurant and the famous wooden escalators (catch a glimpse of them in the film The Christmas Story!). A small number of people old enough to remember have fond memories of Higbees. This 1967 psychadelic commercial is one of the last and best known advertisements for one of Cleveland's Landmarks.

Thanks to polkadotbox2 for the great video!

Cleveland Represents in '08

Well, actually Lebron represents, but since we feel like he is “ours,” join me in celebrating James in the 2008 Olympics!

Now, let’s say a little prayer he gets better real soon....Cavaliers superstar LeBron James sprained his right ankle on Tuesday in practice with the US Olympic basketball team, US media reported. The Las Vegas Sun said the NBA scoring champion rolled his ankle on the foot of Oklahoma City swingman and reigning Rookie of the Year Kevin Durant, who was playing for a team of NBA players brought in to practice against the Olympians prior to next weeks Games in Beijing.

The United States Olympic opener is against China on August 10..tune in and cheer our hometown boy on.

The Return of the Cuyahoga (4/22)

Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008

Happy almost Earth Day!

The Return of the Cuyahoga is a one-hour documentary about the death and rebirth of one of America's most emblematic waterways. In its history we see the end of the American frontier, the growth of industry, the scourge of pollution and the advent of a political movement that sought to end pollution.

The Cuyahoga's story is a particularly apt example for future environmental efforts, because the river can't just be "set aside" as a pristine wilderness park - it runs right through Cleveland, after all. Like most American rivers, the Cuyahoga has to serve widely varying needs - aesthetic and economic, practical and natural, human and animal. The challenge sounds impossible: how to maintain industrial uses of the river near Lake Erie, encourage recreation and entertainment, and yet preserve the nature in and around the river. Impossible challenge - yet it's the same that much of our riparian nation is facing today.

Cleveland FIlm Fest (3/6-16)

Thursday March 6th - Sunday March 16th, 2008

The films are coming! The films are coming! This weeks marks the beginning of the 32nd Cleveland International Film Festival. So many great flicks and not enough vacation days to take off for every show. Below are a few of the films on my "must-see" list. Get your tickets early these shows are sure to sell out!

PRICELESS : Directed by Pierre Salvadori
Ah, life among the jet set on the French Riviera. A whirlwind of parties, shopping, champagne, and caviar. Nice work if you can get it, which gorgeous young party girl, Irene (Audrey Tautou of “Amelie” and “The DaVinci Code.”), certainly can. Jean is one of the have-nots, a mild-mannered bartender in one of the chicest hotels who takes on all the little jobs he can find for the cash. Crazy rich ladies hire him to walk their dogs; sad drunks tell him their stories in the bar late at night. When Irene and Jean’s paths cross, he fakes being a millionaire. Eventually, though, they find they have something in common; a lack of personal finances and a taste for the good life. When Jean begins to take tips from Irene, he soon finds it’s much easier to escort older ladies than to wait on them. In French with English subtitles. Saturday, March 15 at 7:15pm

AMERICAN TEEN : Directed by Nanette Burstein
A huge hit at the recent Sundance Film Festival, winning the Documentary Directing Award for director Nanette Burstein. Burstein spent the 2005-2006 school year shooting footage of seniors at Warsaw Community High School in Indiana. Her film chronicles some of their hopes and lots of their fears as they navigate the tricky waters of small-town high school life and impending adulthood. AMERICAN TEEN is not your grandma’s talking-heads documentary. Burstein uses brilliant animated sequences to express the kids’ fantasy lives, plus a pop soundtrack, voiceovers and graphic collages in the style of MTV’s “Laguna Beach.” It’s a new style of documentary for a new generation totally at home in front of the camera. Iron Symon (10/14)

Sunday, October 14th, 2007

Don't miss Cleveland's own Michael Symon (owner of Lola's & Lolita's) as he heads into round two of the Food network's reality show, The Next Iron Chef.

Destiny seems to have played a role in Symon's journey to the kitchen and to the top of the national food scene. As an 11th grade wrestler at St. Eds High School in Lakewood, he broke his arm while practicing for a meet. Bored, unable to compete and looking for college money, the 16-year-old took a part time job at Gepetto's Ribs as a cook. His affinity for the culinary challenge was realized and this athlete decided he loved to cook.

Good Luck Michael, we are routing for you!
